Royal Navy helicopters landed on HMS Queen Elizabeth’s four-acre flight deck as Britain’s mightiest warship finally got aircraft in time for its first set of sea trials.

Merlin Mk 2 helicopters were seen in action today as the First Naval Air Squadron took their place on board the £3.1billion vessel.

‘Big Lizzie’, as she is affectionately known, was launched in December but is yet to have its F-35B fighter jets on-board, with deck trials due to begin later this year.
