Helicopters built to fight wars will now fight crime in Central Texas

Fighting crime in the air can be tricky–and expensive.

Consequently, the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office is taking advantage of a military program to get three, free helicopters.

“These helicopters did not cost us a penny,” said Sheriff Parnell McNamara.

Through the military’s 1033 Program, the Secretary of Defense provides surplus military equipment to state and local law enforcement agencies, at no cost, for purposes of public safety.
