Fire-fighting helicopters ready for the season

While wildfires raged across southern California last December, California state administrators gave the go ahead to Cal Fire to buy 12 brand new Sikorsky S-70i Firehawks.

The $240 million deal had been on hold since August after Leonardo Helicopters, which had offered its AW189, appealed against the decision.

At the Aerial Fire Fighting North America 2018 event in March, Cal Fire’s director, chief Ken Pimlott, said: ‘We are just working through the budgeting process and funding cycle, deliveries are expected to start within a year or so and be completed within five [years].

‘We had a stringent set of specifications and what we are excited about is it will have the latest technologies,’ he added.
