CareFlight helicopter in ‘serious incident’ during Darwin rescue operation, prompting investigations

The national safety regulator has launched an investigation after a CareFlight helicopter allegedly lost control while descending 500 feet during a search and rescue operation near Darwin earlier this month.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said the “serious incident” occurred about 9pm on May 13, 39 kilometres north-east of Darwin Airport.

An incident summary from the bureau said during the search and rescue the Agusta AW139 helicopter decelerated from 800 feet to locate an emergency beacon.
